From a young age, I always had an affinity for great stories. Whether in books or movies, from The Chronicles of Narnia to Star Wars, I have always been drawn to epic stories of adventure. I was never content to just watch, though. As soon as the credits rolled or I reached the final page, I would instantly be in the backyard, recreating what I had just witnessed. I would use those stories as a starting off point from which I would always branch off and create my own adventures. Though at the time I was just a little kid with a plastic sword goofing off in the backyard, looking back this was my first foray into writing.
Despite my love of exploring and of creating new worlds with my imagination, as a kid, I hated writing with a passion. I would put off writing assignments for school to the very last minute. This disdain for writing continued through high school. But, in my sophomore year, I discovered that it wasn’t all writing that I hated. I was given an assignment to write a fiction short story. That was it. It had to be original and it had to be fiction. No other rules. No list of topics to choose from. No boring textbooks to search through for source material. No works cited page. Just create.
Working on that assignment was the first time I ever enjoyed writing. I tackled it with everything I had. In so doing, I discovered that simply by putting words on a page, I could explore worlds and go on epic adventures. From that moment on, I was hooked.
As I grew, I continued to write stories. Dabbling in all genres, from stage-plays to screenplays to novels and even a little poetry, I had uncovered a passion for writing. In 2005, my stage-play, Prodigal was produced and performed by a theatre company in my home town. In 2009, my short film With Love, Emma was produced.
In 2011 my dreams of being an author were fully realized when my young adult novel, The Adventures of Break Dance Boy: Danger in the Remix was published.
